What is Blue Carbon?
Blue carbon is the climate-healing power hidden within our coastlines—the remarkable ability of marine ecosystems to capture and lock away carbon from our atmosphere and oceans.
Our Coastal Climate Champions:
✓ Mangroves: Nature's saltwater carbon vaults
✓ Tidal Marshes: Coastal carbon capture engineers
✓ Seagrasses: Underwater carbon storage networks
Why This Matters for Our Planet:
These ecosystems work as Earth's blue lungs by:
🌿Capturing carbon 30x faster than land forests
🌿Storing 95% of their carbon in deep underwater soils
🌿Creating living sea walls that protect vulnerable shores
🌿Sustaining marine life in critical nursery habitats
Our Vanishing Coastal Lifelines
Coastal habitats worldwide face catastrophic collapse from:
- Human destruction (aquaculture, urbanization, pollution)
- Climate acceleration (sea-level rise, warming, acidification)
ECOSYSTEM EMERGENCY STATUS:
WETLANDS
- 64% gone since 1900
- Declining 1.5× faster since 2000
- 90% could vanish by 2100 (Ramsar, 2025)
CORAL REEFS
- 50% destroyed
- Declining at 2% annually
- Facing functional extinction by 2070 (IPCC, 2023)
SEAGRASSES
- 30% lost
- 7% yearly loss rate
- 1 in 3 species critically endangered (IUCN)
MANGROVES
- 35% decimated
- Disappearing 3-5× faster than forests
- 50% at risk by 2040 (UNEP, 2024)
This isn't habitat loss – it's the dismantling of Earth's bio-shield that:
→ Safeguards 200+ million coastal residents
→ Stores 10× more carbon per hectare than rainforests
→ Supports 80% of global fish stocks
TIME TO MOBILIZE:
JOIN OUR COASTAL RESCUE ALLIANCE
Our Planet's Coastal Guardians
Mangroves, salt marshes, and seagrasses form Earth's vital blue carbon defense system along shorelines of every inhabited continent. Together, they protect 49 million hectares of vulnerable coasts worldwide - an area larger than California.
These ecosystems work as natural climate engineers:
- Capture 3-5x more carbon than tropical forests
(Source: IUCN Blue Carbon Initiative) - Reduce storm surge damage by up to 66%
(Source: The Nature Conservancy) - Nurture 75% of commercial fish species during lifecycle
(Source: UN Oceans Report)
OUR HUB'S MISSION
We're mobilizing churches and communities to safeguard these guardians through:
- Nursery networks scaling restoration
- Verified blue carbon funding
- Coastline-to-community resilience
MANGROVES: NATURE'S ULTIMATE COASTAL SHIELD
1 hectare stores 1,000+ tons of CO₂ (3× tropical forests!), reduces wave energy by 66%, and boosts fish catches by 50%. (Source: UNEP)
CRITICAL URGENCY
Mangroves disappear at 2% annually – releasing emissions equivalent to 10% of global deforestation despite covering just 0.7% of land.
OUR HUB'S RESPONSE.
We're uniting coastal guardians to:
🔹Reverse deforestation through church-led nurseries
🔹Convert blue carbon wealth into community resilience
🔹Deploy nature's shield where coasts need it most

Why is it significant?
Blue carbon ecosystems are critically important for both climate mitigation and coastal resilience. When intact, they sequester and lock away significant amounts of carbon. When degraded or destroyed, they become net emitters, releasing centuries-worth of stored carbon as CO2 and other greenhouse gases. Annual emissions from damaged coastal ecosystems are substantial, reaching an estimated 1.02 billion tons of CO2 – comparable to 19% of the emissions caused by tropical deforestation globally*.
Additionally, mangroves, tidal marshes, and seagrasses are indispensable for coastal wellbeing. They filter water, nurture fish stocks, and shield shorelines from floods and storm surges. The global ecosystem services from mangroves, supporting livelihoods and populations, are conservatively valued at US$1.6 billion annually*.
Core Mission Statement
We coordinate a global network to restore vital mangrove ecosystems. Partnering with coastal communities, churches, and scientists, we're mobilizing to plant 50+ million trees by 2030 – turning blue carbon into community transformation.
